August in review: Melbourne Cup 2023 draws near, White Marlin out of the Race
After more than two years on the sidelines due to various health challenges, Melbourne Cup winner, Michael Rodd, has once again taken up the reins. The accomplished Group 1 winner recently reentered the world of riding at Deagon, engaging in gentle track sessions. Evidently, Rodd aims to gradually increase his riding responsibilities before resuming competitive racing later this year. Notably, Rodd’s most recent race was on May 16, 2021.
In other news, White Marlin, a prominent contender for the Melbourne Cup has been forced to withdraw from the upcoming spring carnival and is unlikely to grace the tracks this season.
Co-trainer Adrian Bott, speaking at the Randwick races on Saturday, confirmed that the promising long-distance runner has encountered a tendon issue that necessitates an extended break from competition.
Despite the setback, Bott expressed optimism about White Marlin’s prospects for a return to the racing scene during the next spring’s Cups.
Regrettably, it appears that the injury was sustained following his most recent trial, and this issue has surfaced this week, prompting the need for a considerable resting period.
This carnival as well as the following one seem to be off the table for White Marlin, but a comeback could be on the horizon around twelve months from now.
White Marlin boasts an impressive record of six victories in eight starts, with a notable achievement being the Group 3 Easter Cup (2100m) triumph at Sandown in April. Additionally, he secured the runner-up position in the Andrew Ramsden Stakes (2800m) at Flemington in March.
